HOW TO MAKE MINI ZINES

This past #TFconLA I ran a zine exchange at my table, gave out free blank mini zines with pens and a “how-to” sheet, and folks traded the zines they made! Proud of everyone who participated :D

Zines are for everyone. It’s okay if it’s not perfect; give yourself permission to make something “cringe.” The point is to make art and share it.

BLANK LETTER TEMPLATE (PRINT & FOLD)

For digital art, here’s a layout for a letter-sized canvas so you know where the pages go:

MAGMA MINI ZINE TEMPLATES (COLLAB)

For online collab drawing, here are split templates (no rotation needed). Paste the halves together at the seam when you’re done:

You can draw together on Magma, which is free to use.

TRADING TIPS & PRINT NOTES

The hotel hosting TFcon Chicago has a business center where you can print/copy on letter paper. I usually host a folding party the night before each show where friends swing by. Sharing art made by my friends and helping others make their own is exactly the kind of thing I live for.

EXAMPLE: VRCHAT GRIEF ZINE

I made this zine for the TFcon zine machine. It’s a collection of drawings based off adventures in VRchat during a time where I was going through a lot. I didn’t sleep much for a few months and all the art is polished up sketches from nights where i couldn’t actually stand to sleep.

Grief is weird and messy. Sometimes it’s better to do yourself the kindness of distraction by doodling a fun moment instead of just letting yourself be stuck in another nightmare.
